A Schengen visa lets you visit the 29 Schengen countries, including France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, Greece and Switzerland, for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. Each country's consulate in Pakistan publishes its own checklist, and the details differ, so always use the list from the consulate you are applying to. The list below covers what almost every consulate asks Pakistani applicants for.
Which country should you apply to?
Apply to the country where you will spend the most nights. If your nights are equal, apply to the country you will enter first. Applying through the "easiest" consulate instead of your real main destination is a common reason for refusal and can cause problems at the border. Read more on France, Italy, Germany or Spain: which embassy to apply to.
Core documents
- Passport issued within the last 10 years, valid for at least 3 months after you leave the Schengen area, with at least two blank pages. Include copies of old passports and previous visas.
- Application form, completed online or on paper as the consulate requires, and signed.
- Photographs: recent, 35 x 45 mm, white or light background, to ICAO standard.
- CNIC copy and, for families, the Family Registration Certificate (FRC) from NADRA.
- Travel medical insurance covering at least EUR 30,000, valid in all Schengen countries for every day of your trip, including medical repatriation.
Proof of money and ties to Pakistan
- Personal bank statement, usually the last 6 months, stamped by the bank, with a bank account maintenance certificate. See our bank statement guide.
- NTN certificate and FBR acknowledgements of income tax returns for the last two tax years. The common checklist Schengen embassies use in Pakistan asks for these; if you cannot provide them, give other documented proof of income or assets.
- Employed: employment letter or NOC on company letterhead with designation, salary, joining date and approved leave dates, plus the last 3 salary slips and your employment contract.
- Business owner: business registration or NTN certificate, chamber of commerce membership, and a business bank statement.
- Students: enrolment letter and leave permission from the school or university, and the sponsoring parent's documents.
- Property documents or family ties can support your file, but they do not replace clear finances.
Travel plan and bookings
- Day-by-day itinerary that matches your hotel bookings and flight dates exactly.
- Hotel reservations for every night, or an invitation letter if you will stay with family or friends.
- Flight reservation showing entry and exit. Many consulates advise not to buy a non-refundable ticket before the visa is decided.
- Cover letter explaining who you are, why you are travelling and why you will return. See our cover letter guide.
Fees and timing
The Schengen visa fee is EUR 90 for adults and EUR 45 for children aged 6 to 12; children under 6 do not pay. The visa centre (such as VFS Global, TLScontact or BLS, depending on the country) adds its own service charge. You can apply up to 6 months before travel and should apply at least 15 days before, though in Pakistan appointments often need to be booked weeks in advance, especially before summer. A decision is normally made within 15 calendar days, and this can be extended when the consulate needs more checks. Fingerprints are taken at the appointment unless you gave them in the last 59 months.
Mistakes we see most often
- A large deposit just before applying with no explanation.
- Dates that do not match between the itinerary, hotels, flights, insurance and leave letter.
- An itinerary copied from the internet that does not fit the traveller's age, budget or purpose.
- Applying to the wrong consulate for the route.
- Bookings or documents that are not genuine. Never submit them: it can lead to a refusal and a ban.
